Starting a Blog for Profit – Part 1
Starting a Blog for Profit – Part 1
There are two common ways that entrepreneurs use to make money blogging. The first and most common way to turn a blog into a profit making machine is to sell advertising to different companies and brands who want to reach that blog’s readers. The second kind of money making blog is one that helps a single brand improve its image by creating positive associations between the blog and the product in the mind of consumers. Both kinds of blogs can make a lot of money, especially if the creator has a keen mind for marketing.
If you are blogging with the goal of selling advertising, there are two basic ways that you can go about recruiting sponsors who want to put ads on your site; you can let someone else do all of the legwork, or you can do the work yourself and keep all of the revenue. Within the first group, many people make money blogging by selling space through Google’s AdSense program. The advantages of this program are numerous, as it requires very little effort on the part of the blogger or webmaster to begin raking in profits. However, most people discover that they make less money through this method than they had hoped that their blog would earn.
Selling advertising directly to companies who want to put banner ads or sponsored links on your blog can take quite a bit of time, but it is often fairly lucrative. If you have a lot of contacts in industries that are related to the
topic of your blog, you may want to try to go this route. People who have a strong background in sales and are experienced at pitching proposals can make quite a bit of money by renting blog space to interested companies.
The most serious problem with this model is that you often have to build quite a sizable readership before you can attract advertisers, which can mean that you have to do several months of work before you start to make
money blogging.
You may be asking yourself, where do I begin?
Three Steps
1. Have a topic or subject to blog about.
2. Register a domain. (yourblog.com for example)
3. Obtain Webhosting and Blogging software.
We will cover writing posts and articles later in the series, for now, we will assume you have a topic in mind.
Why register a domain?
A domain is a name that identifies IP addresses on the internet. The domain name Yahoo.com represents about fifteen (15) IP addresses. Domain names are used to identify Web pages. For example, in the URL http://www.gohome.com/index.html, the domain name is gohome.com. You register a domain name by registering with a domain name services registrar. You can register at my webite, EasyWebDomains.net. A domain name is about $10 per year.
Use common sense when choosing a domain name because your domain name, or URL, can have an impact in both the online and offline marketing of your blog. Long or difficult to spell domain names can make people ignore your web site and it has to be pretty good for them to stick with it. Short domain names register better with people’s memory and are easy to remember. This can take a few tries as many domain names are already in use and each domain name is unique. Keep trying names until you find one that is available.
Obtain Webhosting and Blogging software
Once you have purchased your domain name you need webhosting. A webhost provider, such as EasyWebDomains.net is set up to install blogging software and also to host your blog. Hosting starts around $10 per month. EasyWebDomains.net interface makes the installation of blogging software easy offering free blogging software with lots of themes and extensive help is also available.
To start you first need internet access, blogging software and somewhere to host your blog. We operate a number of websites with blogging software (free) and monetize them with Google Adsense. As for webhosting your blog, you can also use EasyWebDomains.net. It has many features that are designed for a beginning blogger. EasyWebDomains.net is set up to load the blogging software for you through their user interface. Basically a control panel for the bloggers website.
Blogging software is specifically designed to be simple to use, but even the simplest blogging program can feel very overwhelming to somebody who has not spent a lot of time learning the ins and outs of different kinds of software. Particularly for newer bloggers, learning how to use the interface of blogging software is the most difficult part of blogging.
